The thing I love about Vinyasa yoga is how the movements are synchronized with the breathing. That’s why its called flow yoga. I love to dance, and this is the form of yoga that is most dance-like. Each position slides into the next smoothly.

costa rica yogaThe breathing comes into play as you transition from pose to pose, because the instructor will teach you to move on either an inhale or exhale. You need to be in the next position before taking another breath. It’s very structured and beautiful.

Vinyasa means “connection,” in Sanskrit. The connection can refer to the movements connecting with each other or to the movements connecting to the breath. The cat-cow stretch is a simple vinyasa move, because the spine is arched and then rounded. The inhale is when the spine is arched and the exhale when rounded. A more complex version of a vinyasa would be the sun salutation sequence.

The style of vinyasa allows room for variety. The classes can be fast or slow, and based on easy stretches or complex combined movements. Power Yoga classes mostly use the vinyasa method.

If you hear, “Go through your vinyasa,” you may be confused. This is something teachers often say to have you do three positions at your own pace, the plank, chaturanga, and upward facing dog.

Find a teacher you can relate to. Sri Tirumala Krishnamacharya started this form of yoga, but there is no book to follow for vinyasa yoga, so today’s teachers’ quirks add to it and make it fun. Try out a few. During your classes, focus on feeling the power that your breath gives you. It gives you the energy that feed the motions.

Some of the benefits you can expect include a relaxed mind, release of toxins, and a release of blockage to your energy flow. You will leave the class re-energized, no matter what level you are at.
